Libya
The country of Libya was stuck under harsh rule by its president, Muammar Gaddafi. The living conditions of Libya were on a steady decline since Gaddafi had gained power. Also the rights of the people were being taken away, especially women and children's rights. The unemployment rate was well over 30% when Gaddafi was in power. Most of the employed people were not making enough money to support themselves however. They were working in extremely poor conditions for barely any pay. There were hardly any citizens that were upper class. The upper class citizens were friendly with the government and supported Gaddafi. There was no middle class because of the low salaries. There was the government, and the low class that lived in poverty. The people protested and rebelled but the Libyan military was instructed to use force to control the people. Citizens who defied the government publicly were killed on the spot or beaten by soldiers. These protests were minor and only involving smaller numbers of people. There was no way out for the people of Libya. The people had an idea of that their rebellion could lead to a revolution because of the countries surrounding them that were also going through a revolution, such as Egypt. The fact that their neighboring country Egypt had a revolution and the people were able to rebel just fueled the fire for the Libyan protesters. The protests began to grow more and more violent. The protesters began to protest with weapons and machinery. They were forming a militia that they were hoping could fight against the government in the future.
As Muammar Gaddafi aged, his oppression towards the people grew. Gaddafi amended the Libyan Constitution several times so that he could do what he wanted to do and not get into trouble with the law for it. He decreased the salaries from what they already were, and decreased the living conditions. The people were fed up with his oppressive rule and began to revolt. The protests increased and slowly the whole country got behind the idea of a revolution. This would not come easily however, the military was increasing its force and killing more citizens. The purchasing power of Libya in 2011, which was the beginning of the revolution was $37.94 billion, just one year later with Gaddafi out of power it went up to $77.57 billion. Gaddafi had set up prison camps that Libyan people were thrown in. These camps were disclosed to other countries around the world. At these camps the prisoners were fed half a loaf of bread and a bottle of water everyday. Gaddafi regularly conducted attacks upon his people for no particular reason. He dropped bombs on towns in Libya that showed defiance. In the Hunger Games series, Katniss Everdeen is the mocking jay, the sign of hope. In the movie President Snow says that "hope overcomes fear". Once the people of Libya had a sense of hope, the revolution had already began. On February 15, 2011 the Libyan Civil War officially started.
On February 17, 2011, the people of Libya decided it would be a "Day of Rage". All protesters protested on this day in major cities. The protesters were armed and burned down several government buildings. The Libyan military opened fire on the armed protesters killing many. At the end of the day the military had retreated and escaped the protesters, this was all the hope that the people of Libya needed to over come their fear of Gaddafi. On February 18, the military continued to withdraw from the protested areas. On the next however, the 19th, Libyan helicopters came and opened fire on the anti-government protesters. This marked the beginning of the major fighting between the civilians and the government with fire arms and explosives. Now other countries began to get involved and take the side of the rebels. The revolution of Libya had begun.
